Perhaps, everyone would love to have a flat belly to look good and feel better. But the ideal of that perfect body many of us have does not go well with the lifestyles we lead at all. However, making some permanent changes in lifestyle and health habits can make weight-loss a reality.
A typical professional today will complain of not having enough time to run around a block. But it is a valid excuse, especially when the need for fitness has to be juggled with compulsions of work and family.
However, all we have to do is make conscious choices about what we eat and how we can squeeze in some physical activity in our desk-bound lives. Here are some healthy choices.
The Role of Diet There are no short-cuts to losing fat. A balanced and healthy diet is key to promoting good health. The simple rule is, you decide to be slimmer and make appropriate food choices.
It is very important that we consume a variety of healthy foods to derive appropriate nutrition
needed by our body. Essential vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber should be essential components of the diet.
But if you opt for junk food, you have just decided to be fat. It contains too much saturated fat, which causes people to gain weight. Instead opt for healthier alternatives, and look for foods that are low on fat, salt and sugar.
Have Several Mini Meals a Day
Many people make the mistake of thinking eating less will help them lose weight. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
When the body does not get enough food, it makes the brain think there’s none to be had and starts conserving energy. Body also starts burning muscle for fuel, making it difficult to lose weight.
Instead of eating three big meals, prefer eating five to six small meals each day. Make sure that quantity of the foods and calories are proportionate to how much you want to eat.
Have Breakfast
Breakfast means breaking the fast from the last meal the day before. It is considered as the most important meal of the day.
After the nightlong sleep, the body needs nourishment in the morning to kick start our metabolism. Breakfast provides the energy to start off the day rightly, which helps us perform better at work.
Breakfast needn't include the traditional diet. You can choose fruits, high fiber cereals, and whole grain breads for breakfast.
A nutritious, low-fat breakfast will go a long way in the weight loss plan and over-all health. Even studies have shown that those who eat breakfast are less likely to be overweight.
So don’t skip your breakfast or you will feel starved in the middle of morning.
Have More Proteins
Protein counters hunger pangs by making you feel full faster, as it acts as an appetite suppressant. It is also helpful in boosting metabolism and building lean muscles.
Low-fat sources of protein should be included in every meal as part of a calorie-controlled diet.
A protein-rich diet may also help in improving muscle fitness, immunity, antioxidant function, building HDL cholesterol, and enhancing insulin [a hormone produced by the pancreas. Insulin affects the amount of glucose absorbed by the liver.] function in the body.
Make sure that you look for protein sources that are nutrient-rich and lower in fat and calories, such as lean meats, beans, soy, and low-fat dairy.
Exercise
Exercise is another very important aspect of weight loss. It is something we cannot or should not do without. But how much physical activity should be undertaken everyday depends on person to person.
With busy schedules not leaving us with enough time to hit the gym, walking can be a viable substitute. You can start with little, maybe a half an hour walk, slowly building up to 45 minutes to an hour.
This is an effective way of boosting metabolism and easing the body into exercise mode after a long period of inactivity. Brisk walking especially can help reduce a large amount of calories and thus considerably help in losing weight.
One can also indulge in more enjoyable activities like dancing, swimming, jogging, bicycling etc. A short yoga session or aerobics can also help lose those extra pounds.
Exercising should be indispensable part of one’s daily routine; even 10 to 15 minutes here and there will add up to a lot.
Be Committed
Permanent weight loss requires time as well as effort. Losing weight would require several changes in lifestyle, and it takes a lot of physical as well as mental energy to change one’s habits.
If you are firm in your resolve to lose weight, there is no better time to start than now. Tomorrow never really comes. So make a start today.
Take the challenge, set up realistic goals, and allow yourself enough time to make the required changes in your lifestyle.
