High-fat pregnancy diet increases risk of birth defects

Women who eat a high-fat diet during pregnancy may put their child at risk of birth defects, a new report has found. British researchers carried out a study on mice which showed a pregnant mother's diet could affect the genes of her unborn child, influencing types and severity of birth defects, such as cleft palate and congenital heart disease.

"These are very important findings as we have been able to show for the first time that gene-environment interactions can affect development of the embryo in the womb," said study leader Jamie Bentham of the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics at the University of Oxford.

Healthy diet competition for pregnant women ‎

The International Medical and Education Trust (IMET) has recently organised a health competition of pregnant women in Bhittai Colony to make the women aware about the importance of a healthy mother for a healthy society. As many as 47 pregnant women participated in the contest, while large numbers of spectators were also there to watch the unique competition.

Speaking at the prize distribution ceremony, Dr Safia, who is one of the most active workers of the IMET, said that the World Health Organisation (WHO) and United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) had mentioned that the intake of complete diet was must for a pregnant woman; the diet should be supplemented with vitamins, calcium, zinc, and iron so that a mother could produce a healthy baby.
