Fresh food on menu

Posted in : Fresh food

(added few months ago!)

A FESTIVAL of fresh produce, herbs, preserves and jams will be shared at Epping’s first Food Swap.  Growers can bring their excess organic fruits and vegetables to swap with others at no cost. Organisers hope the swap will demonstrate that “fresh is best” and encourage residents to eat locally grown food.

Organiser Elaine Hamlet started growing her own produce at Mernda’s Carome Homestead seven months ago after a health scare. Her grandsons help tend the garden, which has become a memorial to their late father. Ms Hamlet has harvested more than enough food for her family, so she decided a community food swap would encourage healthy eating and rally community spirit.

“I’m semi-retired and it allows me to support myself with fresh food,” she said. “I question the quality of the food in the supermarket. “We can eat food that is grown locally, it’s there, it’s cheap and it’s fresh.”The Food Swap is held at Epping Primary School, 805 High St, Epping, every second Saturday of the month from 10am.

Lotus Room specializes in deliciously fresh food

Posted in : Fresh food

(added few months ago!)

When Jack Yang opened the Lotus Room four years ago, he decided to do more than just offer delicious hot food. He wanted to add a creative touch to traditional Chinese dishes, often with new entrees. He was certainly no stranger to the restaurant business, having worked as a cook at his father Ping Yang's restaurant, the Empress of China on Dort Highway in Flint.

The decor at Lotus Room is as warm as the welcome visitors receive. The restaurant is adorned with soft, yellow walls with gold accents, lotus flower decor, shiny black tables and chairs, and shadow boxes high on the walls each containing a wine bottle dressed in a colorful Chinese silk dress.

"I had someone design it for me from my ideas," Yang said. "At night, with light behind them, they (the shadow boxes) like they are floating in the air.”But the delicious freshness of the food is the real star of the Lotus Room. That is the key, Yang said, to keep customers happy. He handles everything himself when he can and has a good team working with him. Popular dishes are Imperial Garlic and Drunken Noodle, which debuted over a year ago after starting as a weekend special.

Soups range from $1.95 to $5.75 for a very spicy hot and sour soup for two with chicken, shrimp and scallops. House dishes include chicken for $9.25, beef for $10.25 and shrimp for $11.25, prepared as Sweet and Sour, Almond or Cashew, and vegetable varieties. Combinations for $12.25 contain beef, chicken and shrimp with vegetables and include milder dishes such as Lotus and China Town, and hot and spicy ones like Kung Pao, Szechuan, Mongolian and Imperial Garlic.

Meals include complimentary egg drop soup, crisp noodle and fried crab appetizers and Jasmine tea. Each plate includes a generous serving of rice and vegetables with a delicate sauce and a choice of chicken, beef, shrimp or a combination.

"My menu, compared to most Chinese restaurants, is relatively small," Yang said. "I have all the traditional dishes, plus some fresh ideas. I try to be as creative as possible. It is the traditional way of cooking, but with the American palate. Some are willing to try new dishes, some only want sweet and sour chicken. Some like it very spicy. We use a lot of Szechuan dried chilies (in the spicy dishes)."

Healthy and quick snacks for kids after school

Posted in : Fresh food

(added few months ago!)

Given their way, children would love to grow up on a diet of breads, biscuits and junk food which are often addictive and unhealthy. At such times, the challenge for a mother is, how to package healthy and nutritious foods, which kids often tend to avoid, in a sumptuous and tempting way that makes them ask for more and more…

Healthy and quick snacks for kids after school

The right time for healthy snacks is often the time after school, in the evenings, when kids are hungry and the body demands energy and nutrition. But if you indulge in preparing exhaustive and tedious varieties, that consume time to prepare, your kid will look for other simpler options like biscuits and wafers. Hence, just like it is important to prepare nutritious snacks, it is also important to do it quickly.

Here we bring to you a list of healthy snacks that hardly consume time to prepare and will keep junk food out of your kid's vocabulary.….

Real men eat right

(added few months ago!)

Health statistics reveal that women complain of ill-health and are in hospital more often than men, yet men’s health is definitely poorer than women’s. Consider these male-female differences:

Real men eat right

•    Men suffer more from heart disease, lung disease, high blood pressure and bowel cancer than women.
•    Men have higher rates of suicide and self-injury than women.
•    Men die on average six years earlier than women - life expectancy for men is 75, while for women it is 81 years.
•    Men consult doctors less, take less responsibility for their health and are much less likely to be prescribed antidepressants than women.

Lack of Healthy Food Raises Health Problem among New Zealanders

Posted in : Fresh food , Health and Diet

(added few months ago!)

Intake of unhealthy and nutritious diet could result in serious health complications. A recent study conducted by the University of Otago's department of public health in Wellington has found that people of New Zealand who cannot afford nutritious and healthy food, suffer from more health problems as compared to others.

Lack of safe, nutritious and healthy food has also caused mental health problems among the New Zealanders. The study conducted a survey of the families, education income and employment of 19,000 adults during 2004-2005. The socio-economic and health data from Statistics New Zealand was also evaluated. People who used food banks or grants were classified as food insecure people by the researchers.

The study found that lack of healthy diet, fresh fruits and vegetables and consumption of cheaper food has caused psychological distress among the people. Women were reported to have higher levels of distress as compared to men. Food insecure women were 110% likely to suffer from distress as compared to 60% of the food insecure men. Psychological distress was also reported among young people.

Fresh Foods

Keeping food fresh is important for the health and well-being of your family. LG understands the importance for you to get value from your food and value for your money and have developed cutting-edge technology to make your fridge help you achieve these goals. Leading the LG Health Plus product range is the “innovative” Green Ion Door Cooling fridge which has been designed to keep food fresh longer, retain proteins and vitamins and preserve the taste of the food, keeping all “goodness” intact.  To reinforce its Door Cooling Refrigerator, LG has introduced another unique feature for retaining enhanced food freshness.

LG’s innovative Green Ion Technology uses a ventilation system coated in catechins, a green tea extract to deodorize the fridge. This, combined with a negative ion generator kills food-spoiling bacteria and fungi, effectively resulting in 5.7 times less fungi after seven days compared to conventional models. Green
catechins keep food fresh two and a half times longer than normal fridges. Catechin is extracted from green tea leaf and is non-toxic and of natural antibiotic substance which is not harmful to human beings. Catechin is known to slow the ageing process and is effective in restraining food spoilage. LG’s innovative “Door Cooling System”, for which only LG has an international patent has vents on the interior door panel as well as the sides of the cabinet which allows cool air to be replenished faster every time the fridge is opened and closed. This speeds up the cooling process and shuts off the compressor quicker with electricity savings.
LG’s Smart Compartment Technology with Anti-Bacteria Seal prevents molds entering and spoiling food. The seal which acts as a shield to keep food healthy and hygienic longer is located in the gasket which is washable. The Cell Fresh Crisper is designed to control fruits and vegetables moisture level to retain freshness and strengthen storage time.

Today consumers are confused as all fridges claim to save electricity and protect family health with various types of “features.”  LG lays its cards on the table. It has a 15 year patent on innovative Door Cooling technology which no other refrigerator brand can copy. This coupled with Green Ion technology has proved beyond doubt that LG GDIC fridges are ahead of competition.

New Orleans fresh food and art markets perfect way to shop for holidays

Posted in : Fresh food

(added few months ago!)

Markets beckon as temperatures drop. My kids always have liked visiting the open-air markets we have in New Orleans. In early July, we had all but given up on such an activity as the heat had exhausted us before we even got across the West Bank Expressway.

Now that the weather is a little cooler, I am more apt to pack up the stroller and head out with them. This past weekend, I decided this would be a great way for me to eliminate some of our holiday shopping. I've placed three of those large reusable grocery bags in my closet with a marker and blank stickers to tag each item that goes into the bag.

I learned last year that shopping with a very active toddler is almost impossible, but Press (my almost 2-year-old) doesn't mind shopping at the Freret Street Market or the Crescent City Farmers Market at the American Can Co. He loves getting his weekly bag of kettle corn, petting one or all of the dogs often at the market and identifying the different fruits on the tables.

This weekend, I managed to pick up gifts for my stepson, niece and husband in 20 minutes. Before leaving, we sat outside and ate lunch. As we drove home, Press happily fell asleep with pieces of kettle corn stuck between his fingers and a strawberry lodged in his lap belt.

If you haven't already purchased your Halloween costumes, you might also find some inspiration by going to some of the local markets. There are some beautiful tutus, masks and capes out there. Here's two we plan to visit this month:

10 Easy Ways to Shop for Healthy Foods at Your Local Supermarket

Posted in : Fresh food

(added few months ago!)

We've all done it before. We're late. We've had a long day at work and there's no food in the house, so we quickly dash through the supermarket like we're contestants on Supermarket Sweep and throw whatever we need in the shopping cart and get out.

Well, it's in these reckless binge runs that we can do our bodies harm by carelessly throwing whatever comes to hand first into our carts. We usually grab food items that easy to make and that tastes good. Unfortunately these items tend to be highly processed foods packed with sugar and sodium!

Now, if you're like most people, you probably think you don't have the time or money to spend buying healthy foods, or you think if you want to eat healthy you need to go to a special health food store to shop. Well, throw all those excuses out the window. Your local grocery store packs on average about 40,000 items and many of these are healthy alternatives to what's in your shopping cart. So get ready as we show you 10 ways to easily shop for healthy foods without breaking your budget or wasting time looking for a health food store.

Shop with a List! Don't just wander aimlessly through the store. Know what you need and keep it neatly organized on a list you can easily read while shopping. Spending just a little time each day putting together this list will save you time later when you are actually in the grocery store. It also helps if you know your grocery store and categorize your items by the department they can be found in.This way you can avoid backtracking through the store when you realize your forgot something back in the dairy aisle. Keeping a list also prevents you from succumbing to the junk food aisle, saving you from unhealthy foods that are full of empty calories and sugar.

Don't Shop on an Empty Stomach! You know this is a bad idea. Once you hit the aisles and your stomach starts growling, you're liable to pick up anything that moves! By making sure you shop for food on a full stomach, you'll eliminate buying foods that are bad for you as well as food you just don't need. This saves your body and your wallet. If you can't shop after a meal, make sure you at least drink a glass of water before you go in to help alleviate some of your hunger.

Buy Fresh Food! It really can't get any simpler than this when it comes to eating healthy. By adding fresh foods such as fruits and vegetables to your list, you can easily add the needed vitamins and minerals you need to maintain a healthy diet. Take a look at what you're currently buying. If more than 50 percent of your groceries are coming from a box or a can, you need to reevaluate your choices and head toward the fresh food.

Shop the Perimeter of the Store. When you're searching for the freshest foods, it helps to stay out of the central aisles unless absolutely necessary. In your local grocery store, the perimeter of the store is where they keep all the fresh food items including produce, dairy, and seafood.

Don't Walk By the Organics. When it comes to fresh food, quality counts, and your organics section should be one of your first stops in the grocery store. It may be a little more expensive than the regular section, but the added benefit of not having chemicals and pesticides is well worth the price. If you shop these sections right, you can target the items that are on sale and even get your organic food for less then your non-organics.

Stay Away from Foods and Drinks with Corn Syrup. There is no nutritional value to corn syrup. It's just an empty sweetener that is almost as bad as refined sugar. Don't be fooled! Make sure you read the labels carefully and if corn syrup is one of the first four ingredients, put it down and walk away. You'll be surprised at how many foods are packed with corn syrup including fruit juices, spaghetti sauces, and even some bread.

Fresh Is the Best but Frozen Is Good Too. It's not always feasible to have fresh foods all the time. So when fresh foods aren't available, head toward the frozen aisle for a backup. Frozen vegetables and fruits are most often flash-frozen, which locks in nutrients. It's always a good idea to keep a couple bags of frozen fruits or vegetables in your freezer. You can toss them in the microwave for a quick side dish, make fruit smoothies, or toss into plain yogurt for a fresh fruit taste.

Keep Canned Tomato Products in Your Pantry. Fresh tomatoes are great but here's one exception where fresher actually isn't better. Studies have shown that tomato sauces, crushed tomatoes, and stewed tomatoes actually have an increased amount of the antioxidant lycopene. That's because they are concentrated. Keeping these kitchen jewels handy can help you out the next time you are wondering what's for dinner. Just throw some chicken and sauce in a crock pot or add crushed tomatoes to a soup, and you've got a healthy meal in no time!

Avoid Processed Foods. Remember all those boxes and bags you were throwing in your cart earlier? Most likely it was all processed foods like chips, cookies, and frozen pizza. Save your money and your body. Skip the junk food and stock up on your fruits, vegetables, and meats instead. You'll avoid the sugar rush and feel better in the long run.

Try Whole Grains. The availability of whole grains has increased and it's not uncommon to find whole grain products next to their processed counterpart. Whole grain pastas, brown rice, and whole wheat flour are great alternatives that not only are healthy but they taste great too. One warning when it comes to whole wheat products. Because more and more people are reaching for whole grains these days, packaging has gotten a little tricky. For instance, wheat bread is a good alternative to white bread, but look closely next time you pick up a loaf of wheat bread. If the first ingredient is refined wheat flour, then put it back. It's made from the same stuff as white bread and quite possible is dyed brown to make it look healthier. As a general rule, whole wheat breads tend to be heavier and denser than white bread.
You don't have to be a health nut to shop for healthy foods. With just a little discipline and by practicing the steps above, you'll see how easy it is to shop for healthy foods in the comfort of your own local grocery store.

Calif. lettuce recall covers 19 states, Canada

Posted in : Fresh food

(added few months ago!)

A California farm that issued a voluntary lettuce recall over listeria contamination concerns says its notice has gone out to 19 states and Canada.True Leaf Farms of Salinas initially announced a recall of 90 cartons of romaine lettuce shipped to Oregon, Idaho and Washington.

But the chief executive of Church Brothers, which sells and markets the farm's produce, clarified Saturday that the recall involves nearly 2,500 cartons. CEO Steve Church says most cartons went to institutions such as restaurants and cafeterias, which were notified about the recall. He says only 90 cartons went to retail sales, and those were the ones mentioned in the initial announcement. The company issued the recall after a random check by federal officials found a sample tested positive for listeria. No illnesses were reported.
